A Dog Named Slugger

Do you sometimes have one of those “WHY ME?” days?

Sure, we all do.

Sometimes, we don’t get we want or hoped for.

Sometimes, some people piss us off.

Sometimes, when everything that could go wrong, does go wrong.

And we find ourselves mad, angry, sad, depressed, and genuinely unhappy.

Life isn’t fair, right?

Well, whenever you have these thoughts or emotions, you always got to keep it in perspective.

Meet Leigh Brill.

Leigh Brill was born with cerebral palsy. Yes, life is not fair for her.

As a child, she was humiliated by her schoolmates, strangers, and shockingly (or depressingly) enough, at the hands of the medical people that treated her.

By no means, did Leigh have an easy life.

Alone, with no one to to really help her, her life was one challenge after another.

But, Leigh was paired with a wonder a wonderful friend.

A dog named slugger.

Slugger’s trainer was crying.

Suddenly, I felt as if my heart has plunged into my stomach.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

She brushed a tear from her cheek. “I Know this dog, when I see how he responds to you, there’s no doubt in my mind.”

“You two are destined to be a team. It’s something Slugger knows.”

She was right.

After a lifetime of struggling to keep up with others, Leigh found a helpmate who was always willing to walk with her.

Leigh found hope.

When Leigh met her future husband, Pranav, Slugger was there.

And when Slugger’s health began to fail, Leigh and Pranav were there for Slugger.

Remember, when you wanted oranges but life gives you lemons, you make lemonade.

Just like Leigh and Slugger did.

In memory of Slugger, and in honor of all the dogs who serve as he did.

When things go back and you wonder “oh WHY ME GOD, WHY?”, remember to take a deep breath, take a look at your dog (God spelled backward) who loves you unconditionally, smile, and know that there’s always a better tomorrow.
