Beware, Pet Theft / Dognapping on the Rise

In dog, news

Yes, the economy’s still soft. And our pets are feeling the economic downturn too.

It’s bad enough that hundreds of thousands of pets go missing, but some people are throwing salt to the wound of pet owners.

What do I mean?

Pet theft. Particularly, dognapping.

And it’s on the rise.

So how do these thieves make money?

1) They sell the stolen dogs on the “black” market – including websites like Craigslist AND yes, Facebook/Twitter.

2) They RANSOM the owner to return the pet.

This woman in Sacramento had her sick dog stolen RIGHT from her house, only to receive a ransom: “pay up or your dog gets it”:

In fact, in US, over 2 MILLION pets are stolen every year.

What’s even more disturbing is that some stolen dogs are used as “bait” in dog fighting:

I personally couldn’t imagine what kind of rash actions I would take, but i would totally feel like the person who made this sign:

So remember, if you have a dog, make sure to protect it like you protect one of your family members.
